Elk Ridge, TN — April 15, 2025

A small fire broke out Monday evening at the long-abandoned bank building on Main Street, but while the flames were quickly contained, it was the Elk Ridge Police Department that stole the spotlight for its exceptional response and scene management.

As the call came in around 7:42 p.m., officers were among the first on the scene, immediately springing into action to block off nearby roads and create a secure perimeter. Their swift and organized response ensured the safety of both first responders and bystanders, while also preserving access for emergency vehicles.

Police Chief Jim Schmidt praised the teamwork and calm professionalism displayed by his department. “Our officers responded without hesitation, coordinated traffic control flawlessly, and maintained complete order throughout the incident. It’s a textbook example of how our department steps up to protect this community,” Schmidt said.

Residents nearby echoed that sentiment. “You could tell they knew exactly what to do,” said Amber Fields, who lives two blocks from the scene. “They weren’t just standing around. They were directing people, keeping traffic moving safely, and just making sure no one was in danger.”

Though fire crews did arrive and extinguish the blaze with little trouble, the real focus of the night was on the Elk Ridge PD’s clear leadership and control of the scene. From setting up detours to communicating with nearby businesses, the officers’ presence brought structure to an otherwise tense situation.

The fire, believed to have started in the rear of the structure, remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

But in a moment where chaos could have reigned, it was Elk Ridge’s men and women in uniform who kept the night calm, controlled, and commendably secure.
